Sir Humphry Davy lived in the house in 1798 with Thomas Beddoes, a physician and founder of the Pneumatic Institution, which Davy later worked at; their association contributed to early research into nitrous oxide. The house is also notable as the birthplace in 1803 of Thomas Lovell Beddoes, a poet and son of Thomas Beddoes, and was visited by Maria Edgeworth, a prominent Irish novelist and aunt to Thomas Beddoes.
