Cist

Why this matters

A Neolithic cist tomb; significant as an early recorded and later excavated burial structure, reflecting funerary practices of the Neolithic period in the region.

What is recorded here

Situated towards the bottom of the N-facing slope of an ENE-WSW ridge. A cist was first discovered and closed without disturbance c. 1913 (Hartnett and Prendergast 1953, 57). It was re-opened in 1965 and excavated. The cist (int. dims. 1m E-W; 0.55m N-S; H 0.45-0.5m N-S) was composed of four slabs with outer supporting stones surviving on the S and W sides. The floor was of clay and there was a single lintel. It contained the inhumed remains of a young adult male and a child, and there was a bowl food vessel in the SW corner. (Prendergast 1968; Culleton 1984, 35) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload/revision: 21 May, 2012
