Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Beagh (ballymoe By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are often called haunted because people saw lights moving inside them at night. The truth may be simpler: they were ordinary homes, farms or meeting places from centuries ago. When they fell empty, imagination moved in. Both are true. Memory and myth are building materials.
On a low rise in undulating grassland. Poorly preserved almost circular rath (N-S 27.5m, E-W 26.5m) defined by bank breached by numerous gaps, all of which appear modern. A field wall cuts the monument at W and E, to S of which the enclosing element is obscured by field-clearance rubble. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
