Why this matters

Built by an unknown noble family in the late medieval period, Bawn in Whiteswall is remembered for its strategic location and association with Whiteswall House, offering panoramic views that were crucial for surveillance and defense.

What is recorded here

On a flat-topped elevation in rollling grassland. Good views all round though the land rises towards the E. Known locally as the site of Whiteswall House. According to Carrigan (1905, vol. 2, 280), the 'ancient house or castle of Whiteswall stood opposite Mrs. Kavanagh's house in the field called "the Parks". The site is a gentle elevation, circular in shape, and was enclosed by a thick balla, or stone wall, the foundations of which remain under the surface. The old residence was thrown down about 1750 or earlier, and a new one erected a few perches to the east of it'. There is no visible at ground level.
