These caves in Creswell Gorge, Derbyshire, formed in Carboniferous limestone through glacial meltwater erosion during the last Ice Age. Archaeological excavations have revealed some of the earliest evidence of human occupation in Britain, including Palaeolithic artifacts and the remains of a Mesolithic settlement at Pinhole Cave.
