Overlooking the River Barrow which flows c. 75m to the E. A five-bay two-storey house over partly raised basement, having slightly advanced end bays to front and rear elevations, with a hipped double-pile slate roof. Rendered exterior with granite quoins. There are references to a Colonel Pierce Butler of Barrowmount who died in 1650 and William Grace of Barrowmount in 1669 (Edward Law, Kilkenny History, Miscellaneous Houses; http://homepage.eircom.net/~lawekk/HSESA.HTM, accessed 30 September 2010). The house is associated with the Gore family who are linked with Barrowmount since 1710 (ibid.)
Bence-Jones (1983, 34) gives an early 18th-century date for Barrowmount House. However, according to Craig (1973, 91), the present house dates to the mid- to late 18th century. While the house does present as dating to the 18th century, it is possible that fabric from an earlier 17th-century house is incorporated or that a 17th-century house was located on or near the site of the present house.
