Barrow — ditch barrow in Cush

Barrow — ditch barrow

Why this matters

Ditch barrow, likely dating to the Early Bronze Age. Excavated by Ó Ríordáin, it is significant as part of an early recorded burial tradition in the region, though its wider context remains poorly understood.

What is recorded here

In poorly drained pasture. Not marked on historic OSi maps. One of two barrows (LI048-033001-/002-) excavated by Ó Ríordáin (1936, 180-181) in the townland of Cush located on Mr. W. O’Donnell’s farm and described as following; ‘A second similar barrow was excavated in the same field, and others could be seen at certain states of the vegetation.’ No surface remains visible on Digital Globe orthoimage taken between 2011-13. Faint outline of possible ditch barrow visible on Google Earth orthoimage dated 20/03/2018.
