Ballytarsna Castle was built in the 17th century by the Taafe family, a prominent local Catholic family in County Carlow. It is remembered as a symbol of resistance during the Penal Laws era, when Catholic landowners faced persecution and restrictions.

What is recorded here

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Rectangular structure (7.4m N-S; 10.7m E-W; wall T 1.1m) of roughly coursed granite boulders. Wall at N stands to c. 3m high. Other walls represented by lowest courses only. No evidence for entrance, loops or vault.
