Why this matters

A local fairy fort (ringfort/rath); wider significance not recorded.

What is recorded here

A sub-rectilinear enclosure (max. diam. c. 50m NE-SW; c. 20m NW-SE) showing as cropmark on an aerial photograph (CUCAP, BGG 85, 1971). There is a quarry of roughly the same shape depicted at this location on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map with a limekiln at the NW edge. The cropmark of a fosse may relate to an enclosure which pre-dates the quarry, the interior being quarried out, though it is also possible that the fosse relates to a later boundary enclosing the quarry. A trackway (KK010-002006-) also identified on the aerial photograph seems to be heading towards the limekiln and is probably contemporary with it. There are four ring-ditches in the vicinity of the quarry (KK010-002001-; KK010-002002-; KK010-002003- and KK010-002005-) c. 70m to the N, c. 35m to the NW, c. 75m to NW and c. 40m to the SW respectively.
