Indicated

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a fairy fort in County Mayo, Ireland, holding a circular earth bank twenty metres wide beside an ordinary ringfort. The gaps in its ridge invite imagination rather than certainty, leaving the fort open to memory and myth. It is the kind of place where human life may have vanished but shape and presence remain, waiting for someone to notice what the land still remembers.
In level pasture, 200m N of ringfort (MA100-097----). Roughly circular raised area (35m N-S; 39m E-W), enclosed by earthen bank (H 1m), with slight traces of external fosse. Gaps in NW, SW and E. The above description has been derived from D. Lavelle (compiler), An Archaeological Survey of Ballinrobe and District including Lough Mask and Lough Carra. Lough Mask and Lough Carra Tourist Development Association (1994), No. 105. Date of upload: 6 February 2013
