What is recorded here
Indicated is a subcircular cashel in County Clare, Ireland, where grass still hides stone walls that rise as high as 1.6m on the east side. It sits on a rocky ledge above pasture, watching SSE to NW, with a narrow underground passage tucked against its north interior. Sheep once crowded the small pens at its edges, and people may have stood inside the ring before the wall faded into grass. The fort does not need belief to be strange; it keeps its shape in pasture, shadow and distance.
In elevated pasture on a natural outcrop defined by a rocky ledge from S to W with commanding views from SSE to NW. Within an extensive field system (CL005-160001-). Indicated on the 1916 OS 6-inch map. Listed as ‘Enclosure, possible’ in the RMP (1996). A subcircular cashel (40.8m N-S; 40.3m E-W) defined by a grassed-over stone spread (Wth 1.5-2.45m; H 0.3-0.8m) with stretches of inner and outer wall-facing surviving intermittently. Internal wall-facing is present at the N (H 0.4m), E (H 1.4-1.6m), W to WNW (H 1m), and ENE. External facing is present from the E to SSE (H 0.7-1m). A later stone wall overlies the perimeter. A modern machine-made gap (Wth 2.6m) is at the SSW, with two partly blocked up gaps at the SE (Wth 1.1m) and SW (Wth 1.3m). A Man-made underground passage (CL005-160043-) lies within an oval area (c. 10m E-W) defined by a stone spread and abutting the interior of the cashel wall at N. Small pens in the SW interior and abutting the exterior at E are labelled ‘Sheepfolds’ on the 25-inch map.
