What is recorded here

Situtated on the highest point of a rise in undulating land, c. 150m NE of Caherballykinvarga (CL010-059012-). Listed as ‘Rectangular enclosure’ in the SMR (1992) and in the RMP (1996). Indicated only on the 1916 OS 6-inch map. Visible on OS ortho aerial photography (2005). On inspection in 1997 this was found to be a rectangular area (int. dims. c. 30m N-S; 28m E-W) defined by a drystone wall of apparently modern construction. A small amount of stone spread on the inside of the wall at the base was grassed over (Wth c. 1.5m). Inspection in 2006 (SMR file) established that unauthorised bulldozing of the N half of this large field, (including the rectangular enclosure) and the field to the N had taken place. Extensive remains in both fields are visible in the OS aerial photography (2005). While the rectangular enclosure may have been post-AD1700 in date it is clear that the remainder of the bulldozed area contained the remains of an ancient associated field system. The remains are extant in adjacent fields and the area forms part of a very extensive medieval field system (CL009-059001-) spanning several townlands.
