Embanked enclosure — Ballingarry

Enclosure

Why this matters

A local fairy fort (ringfort/rath); wider significance not recorded.

What is recorded here

Marked as a large circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 60-65m) on the 1840 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Situated at the crest of the E-facing slope of a N-S ridge. Part of the bank is incorporated in a field bank SW-W and elsewhere it is defined by a grass-covered break in slope which is most prominent E-S (dim. 72m E-W). An earthwork site (WA025-042----) is adjacent to the N. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Waterford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore. Date of upload/revision: 16th May 2011.
