Killeavy Castle rose on Slieve Gullion in 1836 when George Papworth transformed a modest lodge into a tower-studded mansion for the Foxall family. The Bell family later owned the place until neglect threatened its bones, but restoration returned the castle to life as a hotel beside ancient woodlands. Its rooms still face the Ring of Gullion, inviting visitors to walk through lanes where servant tunnels, walled gardens and royal pretence once stirred the air.
