Ardmaddy Castle is a privately occupied mansion near the west coast of Argyll, built around a strong rectangular tower with two vaulted basements that may date to the late 15th century. The Campbells held the land from 1313, rebuilt the place after burning it in 1620, and extended it repeatedly until the oldest tower became the plain rear wall of a much larger house. From the road it looks like an uninteresting large building, but inside stands a tower that outlived wars, marriages, seizures and architectural fashion, still occupied by the family that bought it in the 20th century.
