Kames Castle is a four-storey stone tower at the head of Kames Bay on Bute, built in the 13th or 14th century for defence rather than comfort. Its double door, battlement, watchtower and remaining moat marks show it was made to resist invasion, not to host guests. The Bannatyne family held it through medieval Bute, and Ninian Bannatyne stood before the burgesses of Rothesay in 1473 as their captain. That is why the castle still feels less like a holiday house and more like a small fortress waiting for a decision.
