Duart Castle on the Isle of Mull and Castle Sween at the mouth of Loch Sween show how far these borders stretched. Some were tower houses for local lords, while others began as older duns where people watched the water and kept what they could. The name Castles sounds broad because the coast truly is crowded with them. Each stone mark is a different family, different storm and different claim written across the same sea.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castles as Building (medieval)(possible), Dun (later Prehistoric). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
