Graveslab in Ardfert holds an effigy of a bishop lying in pontificalibus, said to mark the tomb of Bishop Stack, who died in 1488. The cathedral keeps many other uninscribed slabs, but this one still points to a named man and a visible church authority. Ardfert’s stone work therefore mixes memory, faith and local pride, with one figure emerging clearly from a field of forgotten names.

Unclear what grave-slab is referred to here. The SMR file mentions many uninscribed grave-slabs within the Cathedral and one with has the effigies of a Bishop lying in his Pontificalibus, said to have been the tomb of Bishop Stack, who died in 1488. Elizabeth Byrne, 18 May 2006
