Cross-slab in Ardane

In the S sector of an ecclesiastical enclosure (TS074-010----) known as St. Berrihert's Kyle and incorporated in an oval stone enclosure, stepped internally, built by the OPW in 1946 (Ó hÉailidhe 1967, 102). This slab is located in the S sector, on internal ledge. It is described by Ó hÉailidhe (1967, 118) as slab 56, composed of yellow sandstone (dims 0.46m x 0.1m; T 0.05m). 'A small incised, slingle-line Latin cross. This stone is now loose and the back can be seen to be blank' (ibid.). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011

Probably dates to the early Christian period (5th–9th centuries AD), likely serving as a memorial or liturgical cross. Associated with the cult of St. Berrihert, it may have marked a sacred or burial site within the monastic enclosure.
