Cross-slab in Ardane

In the S sector of an ecclesiastical enclosure (TS074-010----) known as St. Berrihert's Kyle and incorporated in an oval stone enclosure, stepped internally, built by the OPW in 1946 (Ó hÉailidhe 1967, 102). This slab is located in the S sector, on internal ledge, positioned upside down. It is described by Ó hÉailidhe (1967, 116) as slab 53, composed of yellowish grey sandstone (dims 0.3m x 0.18m; T 0.055m). 'The bottom of this stone is shaped into a tenon. The stone bears the lower portion of an outlined cross, which broadens out at the base. Below is a perpendicular line with a round terminal at the upper end. The part of the slab which bears the cross has been cut back 3mm, leaving an irregular portion in low relief. This may indicate a former use of the same slab. The back is blank' (ibid.).
