Cross-slab in Ardane

In the S sector of an ecclesiastical enclosure (TS074-010----) known as St. Berrihert's Kyle and incorporated in an oval stone enclosure, stepped internally, built by the OPW in 1946 (Ó hÉailidhe 1967, 102). This slab is located in the S sector, on top of the wall. It is described by Ó hÉailidhe (1967, 116) as slab 46A/46B, composed of grey sandstone (dims 0.2m x 0.215m; T 0.06m). 'Shaft of a cross in low relief (1cm) with squared hollows in the existing angles. Reverse of 46A. Bears the lower portion of a Latin cross in low relief (3mm)' (ibid.). Probably dates to the early medieval period, associated with Christian worship or commemoration. Likely used as a grave marker or waymark, reflecting the influence of St. Berrihert in the area.
