Cross-slab in Ardane

In the S sector of an ecclesiastical enclosure (TS074-010----) known as St. Berrihert's Kyle and incorporated in an oval stone enclosure, stepped internally, built by the OPW in 1946 (Ó hÉailidhe 1967, 102). This slab is located in the SE sector, on top of the wall. It is described by Ó hÉailidhe (1967, 116) as slab 43A/43B, composed of reddish sandstone (dims 0.28m x 0.15m; T 0.08m). 'Single-line Latin cross, incised 6mm deep. The head is slightly splayed at the top. Reverse of 43A. Bears a Latin cross in very low relief' (ibid.). Probably dates to the early medieval period, associated with Christian worship or commemoration, given its location within an ecclesiastical enclosure linked to St. Berrihert. Such cross-slabs often served as grave markers or devotional monuments.
