Cross-slab in Ardane

In the S sector of an ecclesiastical enclosure (TS074-010----) known as St. Berrihert's Kyle and incorporated in an oval stone enclosure, stepped internally, built by the OPW in 1946 (Ó hÉailidhe 1967, 102). This slab is located in the N sector, on internal ledge. It is described by Ó hÉailidhe (1967, 111) as slab 36, composed of coarse grey sandstone (dims 0.49m x 0.25m; T 0.08m). 'Latin cross in low relief (1.3cm), with slightly rounded hollows in the angles where the background is cut back deeper. The back is not visible' (ibid.). Probably dates to the early medieval period, associated with the Christian monastic site of St. Berrihert's Kyle. The cross-slab may have served as a memorial or liturgical marker, reflecting the spiritual use of the enclosure.
