Cross-slab in Ardane

In the S sector of an ecclesiastical enclosure (TS074-010----) known as St. Berrihert's Kyle and incorporated in an oval stone enclosure, stepped internally, built by the OPW in 1946 (Ó hÉailidhe 1967, 102). This slab is located in the E sector, on top of the wall. It is described by Ó hÉailidhe (1967, 114) as slab 33A/33B, composed of coarse grey sandstone (dims 0.33m x 0.23m; T 0.11m). 'Lower portion of a Latin cross in low relief (1cm), with rounded hollows in the angles (cut into the shaft only) where the background is cut back deeper. Reverse 33A. Bears a single-line Latin cross with triangular terminal to the shaft and round terminals to the arms. Part of the head is now missing' (ibid.). Probably dates to the early medieval period, associated with the ecclesiastical site of St. Berrihert's Kyle. It may have served as a memorial or liturgical cross, reflecting Christian devotion in the region.
