Cross-slab in Ardane

In the S sector of an ecclesiastical enclosure (TS074-010----) known as St. Berrihert's Kyle and incorporated in an oval stone enclosure, stepped internally, built by the OPW in 1946 (Ó hÉailidhe 1967, 102). This slab is located in the E sector, on top of the wall. It is described by Ó hÉailidhe (1967, 111) as slab 19A/19B, composed of grey sandstone (dims 0.4m x 0.215m; T 0.08m). 'A squared slab with a row of four small bosses along the top each one 2.5m cm in diameter and 7mm high. A Latin cross in very low relief with small rounded hollows in the angles. Reverse of 19A. Probably dates to the early Christian period (5th–9th centuries AD), given its location within an ecclesiastical enclosure associated with St. Berrihert. The cross-slab likely served a liturgical or commemorative function, possibly marking a religious site or burial.
