Cross-slab in Ardane

In the S sector of an ecclesiastical enclosure (TS074-010----) known as St. Berrihert's Kyle and incorporated in an oval stone enclosure, stepped internally, built by the OPW in 1946 (Ó hÉailidhe 1967, 102). This slab is located in the S sector, at ground level. It is described by Ó hÉailidhe (1967, 111) as slab 17, composed of red sandstone (dims 0.66m x 0.18m; T 0.1m). 'Outlined, equal-armed cross with ovoid hollows in the angles and mounted on a slightly narrower shaft. The outline of the cross and shaft are lightly incised. Probably dates to the early medieval period, associated with Christian worship or memorial practice. It may have marked a sacred space or served as a liturgical monument within the St. Berrihert's Kyle ecclesiastical site.
