Rathlin Castle stood on Rathlin Island off County Antrim, probably built for Sir John de Courcy in the early thirteenth century. In 1306, Robert I of Scotland wintered there with James Douglas, his brothers, Sir Neil Campbell and Malcolm II, the Earl of Lennox, after defeats at Methven and Strathfillan. The Bissett family, kin to the Macdonalds who brought the Scots in galleys from Dunaverty, welcomed them. In 1575, Francis Drake and John Norreys attacked the castle, killed the MacDonnell garrison and island residents, and prompted Sorley Boy MacDonnell to raid Carrickfergus in revenge.
