Glamis Castle has housed the Lyon family since 1372, when Robert II granted it to Sir John Lyon, yet shadowy older lives linger beneath its stones. Malcolm II was murdered there in 1034, and Shakespeare placed Macbeth in its halls, though history gives no such tie. Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother played in its rooms, and Princess Margaret was born there in 1930. The castle still stands beside Glamis village, marked by prehistoric cropmarks and an enclosed settlement that hint at much older hands shaping the same ground.
