Lunan Bay features sandstone and limestone cliffs formed during the Carboniferous period, around 300 to 360 million years ago, through sedimentary deposition in shallow marine environments. The area is notable for its well-preserved fossil beds and as a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to its geological and ecological significance.
