Muchalls Castle is an early 17th-century mansion built around an older Fraser tower house, with a surviving vault from a chapel that the Duke of Cumberland burnt in 1746. The Burnets erected the L-plan house between 1619 and 1627, surrounding a courtyard on three sides while leaving the west bounded by a wall. A blocked tunnel once ran toward the shore, and the estate still keeps its dovecot, stables and gardener's cottage beside the main building.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Muchalls Castle as Standing Stone (prehistoric). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
