Crathes Castle Policies is a gravel pit and quarry in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, active from the nineteenth century into the twentieth century. The site also contains Post Medieval ice-houses, suggesting people stored summer harvests against winter hunger beside the digging ground. Men may have swung hammers at grey stone while children watched from the ridge, their breath misting in the cold air above the ice-houses. The policies remain a quiet scar where human hands took gravel and light from the earth.
