Crathes Castle Policies

Gravel Pit (19th Century) - (20th Century), Quarry (period Unassigned)

What is recorded here

Crathes Castle Policies is a gravel pit and quarry in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, active from the nineteenth century into the twentieth century. The site also contains Post Medieval ice-houses, suggesting people stored summer harvests against winter hunger beside the digging ground. Men may have swung hammers at grey stone while children watched from the ridge, their breath misting in the cold air above the ice-houses. The policies remain a quiet scar where human hands took gravel and light from the earth.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Crathes Castle Policies as Gravel Pit (19th Century) - (20th Century), Quarry (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
