Crathes Castle Policies holds Post Medieval ice-houses, structures built between 1561 and 1899 to capture winter cold for summer use. The field boundary marks a place where people stored life itself in frozen water, trusting stone and dark to keep heat at bay. Those ice-holes may have smelled of damp rock and river air, their chambers bright with blue pressure when sunlight entered. They are not display rooms, but working remains: small, stubborn, and still connected to the castle estate that needed them.
