Francis Hay, 9th Earl of Erroll, built New Slains Castle around 1600 on a sea cliff after King James VI destroyed his old seat for Catholic rebellion. The tower later became a Scots Baronial mansion with three gardens, but now stands roofless above Cruden Bay, its restoration paused since 2009. Bram Stoker set two novels at this exact cliff, and the Hays held this coast for centuries before the sea and time took the rooms back.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Slains Castle as Farmstead (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Slains Castle, located in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, was built by the Keith family in the 16th century and later held by the powerful Gordon family in the 17th century. It is remembered for its historical association with the Gordon Earls of Huntly and its role in the Jacobite uprisings.
