Ellon Castle stands as a ivy-strangled ruin where a fifteenth-century vault still holds the weight of forgotten kitchens, though the tower above was rebuilt repeatedly until dismantled in 1851. The surviving south wall and slender round tower suggest a grand château that kept changing shape for centuries, perhaps because its owners never stopped imagining it could be larger. What is gone matters as much as what remains, since the modern castle replaced it and even that structure vanished after 1929.
