Craigston Castle rose between 1604 and 1607 for John Urquhart of Craigfintry, a man who taught in Cromarty before building a white tower that still cuts the Aberdeenshire sky. His descendant Captain John Urquhart added two wings in the mid-18th Century after making his fortune as a privateer, turning a defensive stronghold into a country house where pirate gold may have bought comfort. The rare carved timber panels from the early 17th Century remain inside, waiting for hands that can still feel the distance between a classroom in Cromarty and a gun deck somewhere unknown.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Craigston Castle as Country House (18th Century), Tower House (early 17th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Craigston Castle was built by the Drummond family in the early 17th century and later expanded in the 18th century. It is remembered as a significant example of Scottish country house architecture and as part of the historic Drummond estate.
