Ellon Castle kept a chamber pot beside its best chair, proving that grandeur and filth share one household. John Baxter rebuilt the tower in 1706 and 1781, yet the basement vault reaches back to the early 1400s. The castle was dismantled in 1851, but its round tower and south wall still stand like a sentence broken in half.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Ellon Castle as Country House (mid 19th Century) (1851), Country House (early 20th Century) (1927), Office(s) (early 17th Century) (1725)-(1927). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Ellon Castle, located in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, was originally built as a tower house in the early 17th century and later expanded into a country house in the mid-19th century by the Keith family, who were prominent local landowners. It is remembered for its historical association with the Keiths of Ellon and as an example of evolving Scottish architecture from the early modern to the Victorian period.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
