Westhall stands in Aberdeenshire as a medieval tower house later enlarged into a country mansion, its L-plan stone body still carrying a circular turret and crenellated parapet. It passed from the Diocese of Aberdeen to the Gordons, then to a vicar of Elgin in 1681, before becoming a farming school. The old fortress became a classroom, and the fortress learned to teach.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Westhall as Country House (19th Century), Tower House (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Westhall was originally a medieval tower house, later replaced by a 19th-century country house. It is remembered as an example of the evolution of Scottish domestic architecture from defensive stronghold to civilian residence.
