Castle Forbes is a gothic revival house in Newtownforbes where the Forbes family have lived since Captain Arthur Forbes received 1,266 acres in 1623. Fire, rebuilds and added wings have layered the castle through the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, yet it still stands as the seat of the Earl of Granard. Its old-growth forest, small airport and changing rooms make it less a museum piece than a living estate, still shaping itself around the people who remain there.
