What is recorded here

Findlater Castle is a ruined medieval fortress on a rocky island off the coast of Aberdeenshire, linked to the mainland by a narrow causeway. It belonged to the St Clair family during the reign of David II before becoming the seat of the Ogilvies, who abandoned it after 1600. The castle once contained a chapel, stables, and a doocot, but only outlines and dangerous ruins remain today.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Findlater Castle as Castle (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Findlater Castle was built by the Keith family in the 13th century and later held by the Seton family. It is remembered for its strategic importance in the northeast of Scotland and its association with historical events during the Wars of Scottish Independence.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
