What is recorded here
Fyvie Castle is a layered medieval stronghold in Aberdeenshire where five families added towers across centuries, creating a building that keeps growing instead of decaying. Its rooms hold wheel stairs, armour, portraits and ghost stories about weeping stones, suggesting that memory itself may still be shaping the house. The castle stands as a rare place where human ambition, injury, love and imagination all left marks that can still be touched.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Fyvie Castle as Castle (medieval), Country House (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Fyvie Castle was originally built in the late 13th century by the Comyn family, powerful feudal lords in northern Scotland, and later held by the Gordon family from the 15th century. It is important as a well-preserved medieval and later country house, reflecting the history of Scottish noble families and the region's strategic significance.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
