Ecclesgreig Castle rose in 1844 when William Forsyth Grant rebuilt a 16th-century foundation into a Victorian Neo-Gothic mansion, using farm income to afford an Italian Renaissance garden crowded with classical statues. The estate later fell into decay as taxes and changing politics stripped it of revenue, leaving its grand rooms empty and its purpose forgotten. Yet local tradition still claims Bram Stoker gathered inspiration for Dracula there, suggesting the house may have worn darkness like a garment long before it became ruins.
