Dunnideer Castle is the earliest authenticated tower house in Scotland, built circa 1260AD inside an older vitrified hillfort. Its west gable still rises nine metres above the grass, holding a broken lancet window that frames the sky like an empty eye. Tradition claims Gregory the Great laid the first stones in 890AD, but the chamber remains bare enough for imagination to move through it.
