Castle Hill in Aberdeenshire held a royal castle first mentioned in 1264, when Richard the Mason repaired it beside a chapel. It changed hands during the Wars of Independence, endured a siege in 1308, and disappeared so completely that Aberdeen’s own fortress became a maze of myths. The hill keeps that absence alive: a small mound where kitchens, stables, a mint and a prison may have stood before memory swallowed them.
