The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

A cairnfield dating to the later prehistoric period, the Mains of Altries represents a landscape of ritual or funerary significance, typical of Neolithic or Bronze Age settlement and burial practices in Scotland. Its possible association with field boundaries suggests a long-standing use of the land for both agricultural and ceremonial purposes.
