Rathroe Castle (in Ruins)

Castle, tower house

What is recorded here

Rathroe Castle stands in ruins at Cartronrathroe, County Mayo, its tower house reduced to a broken silhouette against the sky. The exact date of its building and the names of the people who lived inside it have vanished, leaving only stone and silence behind. What remains is a hollow shape, perhaps a chamber, perhaps a staircase, perhaps a room where someone once listened for footsteps that never came.
The Archaeological Survey of Ireland (ASI) is in the process of providing information on all monuments on The Historic Environment Viewer (HEV).
