RATH & Man-made underground passage: THE BLACK FORT in Drumgose

Black Fort in Drumgose is a man-made underground passage beside an old rath, the kind of hidden place people built when they wanted to disappear from sight but stay close to the land. It may have served as a shelter, a boundary marker, a trading hole, or a chamber for ceremonies that did not wish to be remembered plainly. The earth above would have hidden its shape, while the passage below gave back depth, darkness and the smell of wet stone.
