What is recorded here
Mortons and Cavanagh's both claimed the castle, yet the underground passage still cuts through Shaness Castle Park today. The narrow dark tunnel may have let people leave the stronghold when flames or arrows closed the front gates. It is the kind of hidden route that turns a trapped house into a living one, because escape becomes possible instead of fatal.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as RATH & Man-made underground passage. Recorded period: E.CHRIST.. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
