Mud and memory in County Down. A rath is a fort, a boundary drawn in earth, but the passage beneath it is a different kind of admission. Build a wall to keep others out, then dig a hole to go down and around. That is not cowardice. It is imagination. The dead understood what arrogant men still refuse: walls exist to be dissolved, not obeyed.
