RATH & Man-made underground passage in Ballyhill Lower

RATH & Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Mortons and Ballyhill fields still hide a man-made passage beside an old rath. Built in the early Christian period, the hole may have served as a cellar, refuge or ritual entrance. People likely carried butter, children or secrets through darkness while storms raged above. The earth kept what those hands dug, waiting for curiosity to find it again.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as RATH & Man-made underground passage. Recorded period: E.CHRIST.. Recorded protection: Scheduled. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
